Sunderland (Mere Knolls) Cemetery contains 181 burials from both the First
and Second World Wars.
Five soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are buried in this cemetery.

Private Richard Burnett. 15996.
Depot, the Yorkshire Regiment. Died at home 6 October 1916.
Enlisted Sunderland.
Private Burnett's headstone is a family one. The inscription on the
headstone records;-
"PETER THE BELOVED HUSBAND OF ELIZABETH BURNETT WHO DIED JULY 8
1908 AGED 64 YEARS
ALSO THE ABOVE ELIZABETH S BURNETT WHO DIED SEP 11 1935 AGED 91 YEARS
ALSO
PTE RICHARD BURNETT, YORKS REGT, YOUNGEST SON OF THE ABOVE, WHO DIED
AT WILLERSLEY CASTLE MATLOCK, OCT 5TH 1916 AGED 27 YEARS ... OF WOUNDS
RECEIVED IN ACTION..... "

Alexander Higgins. 205340. 4th Battalion
the Yorkshire Regiment. Born at Sunderland. Died at home 7 April 1918.
Aged 21.
Born Sunderland, Enlisted Richmond (Yorks), Resided Sunderland.
Alexander Higgins Army Service Record survives. From this we can see
that;-.
a). He was born in May 1896 (registered in South Shields). He was discharged
on 29 September 1917 as being no longer physically fit (not clear if
wounded, or not.).
b) He had enlisted in December 1915.
c) He was a telephone operator in civilian life.

Private Thomas Kisby, 9061. 9th
Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Died at home 15 June 1915.
Born New London (Loftus - Yorks), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Monkwearmouth.

Lance Corporal George
Trevor. 10917. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Martha
and the late Evan Trevor; husband of Sarah Trevor, of 6, Brookside
Gardens, Sunderland. Died at home 9 September 1916. Aged 29.
Born Sunderland, Enlisted Sunderland.
