Yorkshire
Regiment War Graves, - Whickham (Garden House) Cemetery, Tyne-and-Wear |
Whickham (Garden House) Cemetery is located between Dunston and Swalwell, and belongs to the Urban District Council. There are 20 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-18 war here, including that of 1 unidentified soldier. There are 17 burials of the 1939-45 war, including those of 2 unidentified sailors of the Royal Navy. There is 1 non world war service burial here.
One soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is buried in this cemetery.
However, this soldier is buried in the same grave as his brother, who served
with the DLI, and nearby is the grave of a soldier with the same surname,
thought to be a cousin. Almost adjacent to these graves is a special memorial,
to a soldier with the same surname, who was killed in Belgium.
We are extremely grateful to Norman Cummings (<norman_cummings@hotmail.co.uk>)
for providing the photographs of the headstones and of the cemetery.

Norman Cummings commented regarding this memorial;-
"A Special Memorial erected by the Inhabitants of Swalwell to honour
Pte. 2586 William FINLAY, DCM, and inscribed "Who so Nobly risked his
life to save a comrade".
William Finlay was awarded the DCM for his actions of the 27 February 1916
and is cited as Volunteering to rescue a buried miner. The tunneller was
subsequently recovered dead.
William Finlay was later KIA on 2 March 1916, and is commemorated on the
Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
