The Darlington War Memorial consists of an obelisk on which is inscribed;-

"TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD
THEIR NAMES ARE INSCRIBED ON MARBLE TABLETS IN THE HALL OF MEMORY
1814 - 1918
1939 -1945"

Behind the obelisk is the Memorial Hall, part of Darlington Memorial Hospital. In this hall there are 11 marble panels on which 875 names are recorded.

There are 875 names listed on these panels, - all of whom had an association with the town of Darlington.

However, recent research by Paul Stephenson is described in an article in the Northern Echo on 13th November 2021 ("Remembering the forgotten of Darlington"). After nearly a decade of research, the research came up with 155 names
which have unimpeachable connections to the town. All the names were of men who lost their lives in the First World War, but are not included on the town memorial.

The criteria for inclusion were strict: the man had either to be born in Darlington or to have lived the bulk of his life in the town. These names should have been permanently memorialised on the tablets at the Memorial Hospital but have been omitted.

155 names of the men missing from the Darlington Memorial are shown in the research.

10 soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment are shown on this list.
