The War Memorial inside the Town Hall, Durham City
Photo : Norman Cummings (<norman_cummings@hotmail.co.uk>)
Inside the Town Hall in the Market Square in Durham City is the War Memorial plaque commemorating those who lost their lives in the two World Wars. Although the memorial is located in the main entrance to the building, this entrance is normally only used for ceremonial occasions. Visitors to the memorial must use the door to the right of the main door. As a consequence of the main door not being open, there is not much light for viewing the memorial in the vestibule where it hangs.
Seven panels on the top row of the memorial commemorate 205 men who lost their lives in the First World War, and the lower three panels commemorate 155 men who lost their lives in the Second World War.
24 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial. One or two other names are "possibles" for the Yorkshire Regiment.
Photos of the individual First World War commmeorative panels are shown below. We are very grateful to Norman Cummings (<norman_cummings@hotmail.co.uk>) for these photos.
