The Durham Light Infantry Book of Remembrance in Durham Cathedral

The Book of Remembrance is held in the Durham Light Infantry
Regimental Chapel in Durham Cathedral, on Palace Green, Durham.
The Book of Remembrance is of parchment pages bound in green leather with
gold embossed lettering below the regimental badge, which is in silver. The
pages bear an individual inscription in calligraphy with the Badges of the
Regiment and the Durham Light Infantry in the top corners raised and silvered.
It is kept in a glass fronted lectern case, mounted on a scrolled and glazed
pedestal. The title is incised into the top of the case.
12,606 men of the Durham Light infantry are commemorated in this Book of Remembrance. The book is arranged by the days of the year, with the names of those who lost their lives on a particular day listed, by year.
A transcription of the names commemorated is provided by the North East War Memorials Project website.
Of those commemorated, 112 of those men originally served in the Yorkshire Regiment.

"The Register of Soldiers’ Effects states his widow was named Elizabeth
A and his Pension Record Card says that she was living in Middlesbrough with
their three children, the youngest born in the Dec Qtr 1916 either just before
or after his father was killed. Looking at the SDGW record, he was certainly
born in Dudley (but Worcestershire not Staffordshire) in 1882 and I strongly
suspect that his place of residence, Mexboro', Yorks is a mistake as by 1891
he was living in Middlesbrough with his parents Samuel and Jessie Hawkins.")

( Private Elijah Jane originally enlisted with the 7th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment on 29 August 1914, but was discharged from the Yorkshire Regiment
on 6 January 1915. The reason for his discharge was "No longer physically
fit for War Service, - No chewing teeth and chronic dyspepsia."
However, he re-enlisted (with the DLI) on 15 March 1915 and served until 20
August 1917 when he was killed in action. )
