The War Memorial for Grouville, Jersey (C I)
Photo from "The
Channel Islands and the Great War"
Roger Frisby of the Channel
Islands Great War Study Group has kindly allowed us to use the photographs
of the Grouville War Memorial and the list of transcribed names on the Yorkshire
Regiment Remembrance website.
The memorial is located on a small triangular strip of land between a main
road and a smaller road opposite the entrance to one of Jersey's best loved
golf courses, the Royal Grouville. The memorial is made from granite and takes
the form of a cross. At the base of the cross are panels with the names of
fifty three men who died during the Fisrt World War. Also listed are the names
of five men who died during the Second World War.
Two soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are named on this memorial.
With one of them, there is some confusion as to his name. In the Commonwealth War Graves Commission register and Soldiers Died in the Great War he is shown as "John Emile Herbert". In the Medal Rolls Index he is shown as "John Emile Hebert". On the Grouville memorial, he is shown as "E J Hebert". On balance, it is thought that the surname "Herbert" is the more likely, and will be used.
