Sent back to England he became Sergeant Major of 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment and was discharged on 3/8/16 due to wounds.

Corporal William Harrison, 3/7103.
Born in Lazenby, Eston. Enlisted in the 3rd Battalion, and first served in France with the 2nd Battalion (20 March 1915).
He was wounded in October 1915, and on recovery joined the 7th Battalion.
He was killed on 5 November 1916, and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
The uniform he is wearing in the photo is one that would have been worn in the early days of the war when no regular uniforms were available.

Resided 1 Sidegate Durham City. Killed in Action 10 July 1916 at the Capture of Contalmaison.

Private Thomas Hunter Swainston, 63143(right).
Before the war, Thomas Hunter Swainston was a colliery pony driver, living with his parents at 5 Fulton Terrace, Shildon.
He initially served with the Yorkshire Regiment (18305), and transferred to the West Yorkshire Regiment after recovering from wounds. (Wounded Q4 1915).
The above photo was taken in hospital.

Didn’t enter France until 1916. Commissioned 25/4/17 he rejoined the battalion and was taken prisoner during the German advance in 1918.
