The War Memorial at Lingdale is a cross on a square base. The base is inscribed;-
ERECTED TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY
OF THE MEN OF LINGDALE AND STANGHOW
WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR
1914 - 1918

(1) Shown as "Lieutenant", not 2nd Lieut, in CWGC.
(2) Can not find a "J H Allison" in either the CWGC register or
SDGW, but there is a "J Allison" from Skelton who doesn't appear
on the Skelton War Memorial.
(3) Shown only a "G Bell" in both CWGC and SDGW.
(4) Two brothers, in the same Battalion, killed on the same day.
(5) Military records show him as "J R Burrows" but correct name
is "J R Burrow".
(6) Almost certainly this should be "T Agar" , - see below
Serjeant Arthur Arnold, 220691. 9th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment,
formerly 1615 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Edward and Mary Arnold, of 47,
Charlton, Boosbeck, Yorks. Native of Lingdale, Boosbeck. Killed 16 October 1918.
Aged 24.
Buried MONTAY-NEUVILLY ROAD CEMETERY, MONTAY.
Born Loftus (Yorks), Enlisted Skelton, Resided Lingdale.
Private John William Agar, 9114. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Barker and Mary Agar, of 13, Queen St, Boosbeck, Yorks. Killed 30 August
1915. Aged 26.
Buried NORTBECOURT CHURCHYARD, MENTQUE-NORTBECOURT.
Born Skinningrove, Enlisted Richmond (Yorks), Resided Boosbeck (S O).
(Shown as "James William Agar" in SDGW and " J W Agar"
in CWGC records. But 1911 Census has him as "John William" and the
1901 Census as "Jack".)
Private Thomas Agar, 15924. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed
6 October 1916.
Born Skinningrove, Enlisted Richmond, Resided Boosbeck (S.O.).
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
(Barker and Mary Agar had three sons, Thomas (aged 25 in 1911), John William
(21), and George Robert (20). Almost certainly, the "F Agar"
on ther Memorial should be "T Agar".)

Killed 28 September 1916.

Commemorated Pier and Face 2 A 2 C and 2 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
(Military records show him as being John Robert Borrows. However, the 1911
Census shows him as John Robert Borrow, a miner living in Lingdale
with his wife Elizabeth Jane. His birth was recorded in the MNarch Q 1878
as John Robert Borrow.)

(East Kent Regiment), formerly 3517 2nd/4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Husband of Ellen Breckon, of 7, Oldham St., Lingdale, Yorks. Killed 18 September
1918. Aged 25.

from the area in either the CWGC register or SDGW).

of Ada Naomi Smith (formerly Dove), of 16, Dale Terrace, Lingdale, Boosbeck.
Died at home 20 February 1916. Aged 35.

14 February 1916.

Private Thomas Herbert Dove. 20910. 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of George Ripley Dove; husband of Sarah Emily Dove, of 10, Barrett St.,
Middlesbrough. Killed 22 March 1918. Aged 25.
Born Guisborough, Enlisted Middlesbrough.
Commemorated Bay 5, Arras Memorial.
(Although not obviously from Lingdale, this was the only "T Dove"
from the area in either the CWGC register or SDGW).
