The War Memorial in North Skelton's Garden of Remembrance

The North Skelton War Memorial is situated in a Garden of Remembrance on Vaughan Street, opposite Bolckow Street.

The memorial is a First World War Infantryman in mourning pose with head bowed and rifle reversed on a tapering plinth and square base. This is set in a paved Garden of Remembrance, with benches at the sides.

The memorial is dedicated to "IN SACRED AND HONOURED MEMORY / OF / THE FOLLOWING MEN / OF NORTH SKELTON
WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 18.

24 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War.

13 men who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.


Acting Corporal Robert Henry Bell, 17295. 10th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 26 October 1917.
Born Skelton / Saltburn, Enlisted Richmond, Resided North Skelton.

L/Cpl Peter Gosling, 39264. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 20 September 1917.
Born West Hartlepool, Enlisted Saltburn, Resided Skelton-in-Cleveland.

Private Frank Harker, 27360. 14th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, formerly 2612 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 27 September 1918.

Buried FIFTEEN RAVINE BRITISH CEMETERY, VILLERS-PLOUICH.

Private Isaac Jacques, 2719. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 2 May 1915.

Corporal Benjamin E Nunn, 3405. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Robert and Jane Nunn, of 5, Holmebeck Rd., North Skelton, Skelton-in-Cleveland, Yorks. Killed 25 September 1916. Aged 21.
Enlisted Northallerton, Resided North Skelton.
Buried ST. SEVER CEMETERY, ROUEN.

Serjeant John Willie Skipper, 10602. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Eldest son of John and Mary Skipper, of Massingham, King's Lynn, Norfolk; husband of Minnie E. Wooding (formerly Skipper), of Castle Ashby, Northampton. Killed 9 October 1916. Aged 27.
Born King's Lynn (Norfolk), Enlisted Middlesbrough, Resided Northampton.
Buried DERNANCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.

Private Robert Speechley, 4282. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Rimes and Eola Speechley, of North Skelton, Skelton-in-Cleveland, Yorks. Killed 11 August 1916. Aged 22.
Enlisted Saltburn, Resided Skelton-in-Cleveland.

Private Richard Matthew Thorpe, 200951. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 8 June 1918.
Born Skelton, Enlisted Skelton.

Private John Thomas Walker, 29014. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William and Hannah Walker, of Foston York. Killed 2 April 1917. Aged 30.
Born Pocklington, Enlisted York.
Buried HENIN CRUCIFIX CEMETERY.
