St. George's Church, Brookhill (Sheffield) is now used as a
lecture theatre by Sheffield University. In this now redundant church are
two First World War Memorials;-
1. St. Luke's Church, Hollis Croft (Sheffield), and
2. St. George's Church.
The memorial for St. Luke's Church was taken from the church before it was demolished and transferred to St. George's Church. The memorial is a wooden board with two main panels. The commemorated names are painted in gold upper case. 113 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War, including 1 soldier who served in the Yorkshire Regiment.
The memorial for St. George's Church is partly obscured by the fabric of this University lecture hall and no clear image can be obtained of the memorial. Wayne Bywater (<waynetyke123@aol.com) has managed to obtain photos of parts of the memorial, including one where the name of the Yorkshire Regiment soldier who is commemorated is included.
The St. George's Church War Memorial consists of fine oak panelling on either side of the chancel front bearing the names of 177 members of the congregation and parishioners who fell in the Great War. As the memorial cannot be photographed in its entirety, a drawing of the memorial has been included below.
A transcription of the names of those commemorated is on the Sheffield Soldiers in the Great War website.
Associated with the church is a Memorial Hall which was also purchased by the University. This memorial hall also contained a Roll of Honour of those parishioners who fought in the First World war.
