The War Memorial for Sutton (Greater London)

The Sutton War Memorial is located in Manor Park, Sutton, with
Carshalton Road to the South and Throwley Way to the West.
The memorial is a cross of Portland stone surmounting a high stone base. The
base has brass plaques, commemorating those who lost their lives in both World
Wars, on all four sides.
522 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War.
2 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.
Captain Howard Laidlaw Bartrum. 7th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Mrs. Lucy A. Watt (formerly Bartrum), of 3, Wickham Rd.,
Sutton, Surrey, and the late Albert Bartrum. Died at home 8 July 1918. Aged
39.
Buried RICHMOND CEMETERY.
The following notes are from Robert Coulson's Biographies
of Yorkshire Regiment Officers;-
"Howard Bartrum was born in Croydon in Surrey in 1879.
Captain Bartrum was in charge of “D” company of the 7th Battalion
for the attack on Fricourt on July 1st 1916. The battalion advanced at 2-30
p.m. suffering heavy casualties, “D” company alone losing 61 men.
He saw action again at Sailly-Saillisel in February of 1917 and again during
the Passchendaele offensive in the autumn of that year.
The battalion disbanded in February of 1918 and Captain Bartrum died at home
on July 8th 1918 aged 39 whilst at the regimental depot at Richmond in Yorkshire."

Regiment, formerly M/2/187944 ASC. Son of the late W. Rowley; husband of Violet
O'Hara (formerly Rowley), of 5, Hengrove Cottage, Hengrove, Margate, Kent.
Killed 15 January 1918. Aged 29.
Born Gumshall (Surrey), Enlisted Sutton.
Buried ROCQUIGNY-EQUANCOURT ROAD BRITISH CEMETERY, MANANCOURT.
