The War Memorial Plaque in Wombleton Village Hall

The War Memorial plaque in the Wombleton Village Hall commemorates 10 men from Wombleton and Welburn who lost their lives in the First World War and 6 in the Second World War. Additionally the memorial records the names of 46 men who served in the First World War.

Of the names commemorated for the First World War, 5 men had served with the Yorkshire Regiment.

Private Thomas Gibson, 3348. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed on 22 July 1916.
Enlisted Whitby, Resided Wombleton, Nawton (Yorks).
Buried LA LAITERIE MILITARY CEMETERY.

Private William Hill, 3/7774. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William and Emma Hill, of Wombleton, York. Killed on 17 October 1916. Aged 22.
Born Wombleton (Kirbymoorside), Enlisted Pickering.
Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private James Johnson, 3953. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed on 17 September 1916. Aged 21.
Enlisted Malton, Resided Wombleton (Nawton - Yorks).
Buried ADANAC MILITARY CEMETERY, MIRAUMONT.

Private Ralph Johnson, 1988. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed on 25 January 1916.
Born Welburn (Kirbymoorside), Enlisted Kirbymoorside, Resided Nawton.
Commemorated Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.

Private John Wilson. 240407. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of James and Annie Wilson, of Wombleton. York. Killed 14 November 1917. Aged 21.
Born Wombleton (Kirbymoorside), Enlisted Malton, Resided Wombleton
Buried BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION (NORD).
