The Castleton and Danby War Memorial. The Castleton and Danby War Memorial.

The Castleton and Danby war memorial is located just outside Castleton, on the Castleton to Ainthorpe and Danby Road. It overlooks Esk Dale. The inscription on the Castleton and Danby War Memorial, and the names of those who appear on it are as follows;-

"To the Honoured Memory of the Men of This Parish who Gave Their Lives for King and Country in the Great War 1914 - 1918. Their Name Liveth for Evermore."

The Castleton and Danby War Memorial was first unveiled in October 1921 by Viscount Downe Baron Dawnay. Two postcards, copies of which have been kindly forwarded by Bill Danby (<hollybush@ntlworld.com>) show this unveiling and are reproduced below. The postcards are by A J Graham of Redcar.

Private Harry Dale, 200914. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 23 April 1917.
Commemorated Bay 5, Arras Memorial.
Enlisted Saltburn, Resided Brotton.

Private Lionel Hodgson, MM, 16491. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 1 October 1917.
Commemorated Panel 52 to 54 and 162A, Tyne Cot Memorial.
Born Whitby, Enlisted Whitby, Resided Carlin How.

Captain John Vivian Nancarrow. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George Bennett Nancarrow and Charlotte Alice Nancarrow, of "Ravenscroft," Grove Hill, Middlesbrough. Killed 25 April 1915. Aged 30.
Commemorated Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.
*Captain Nancarrow is also commemorated on a memorial in St. Hilda's Church, Danby.

Private Thomas Edward Peill, 18976. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William and Margaret Peill; husband of Louisa Peill, of Church St., Castleton, Yorks. Killed 18 June 1918. Aged 38.
Buried PHILOSOPHE BRITISH CEMETERY, MAZINGARBE.
Born Danby (Yorks), Enlisted Whitby, Resided Danby (Grosmont).

Private Horace Edward Robinson, 205482. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr. R. W. and Mrs. M. J. Robinson, of Primrose Hill, Castleton, Yorks. Killed 28 March 1918. Aged 20.
Commemorated Panel 31 and 32, POZIERES MEMORIAL
Born Danby (Yorks), Enlisted Saltburn, Resided Castleton / Grosmont.
(Note: Horace Robinson was the brother of R Sydney Robinson, C/12770 of the 16th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, who was killed on 13 April 1918 aged 22. Commemorated on the PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL).

Private Thomas Sanderson, 26893. 8th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 21 February 1917.
Buried RAILWAY DUGOUTS BURIAL GROUND.
Born Danby (Yorks), Enlisted Whitby, Resided Grosmont (Yorks).

Private Fred Scarth, 121632. 21st Battalion Machine Gun Corps (Infantry, formerly 205039 Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 21 March 1918.
Born Danby (Yorks), Enlisted Castleton (Yorks).
Commemorated on Panels 90 to 93, POZIERES MEMORIAL.

Private Ernest Tindall, 203859. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 23 October 1917.

Born Sleights (Yorks), Enlisted Whitby, Resided Sealholm.

Private Jonathan Underwood, 34172. 8th Battalion York & Lancs Regt., formerly in Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Thomas and Eleanor Underwood. Born Eaglescliffe, Co. Durham. Killed 28 October 1916. Aged 30.
Buried LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY.
Born Grosmont (Yorks), Enlisted Loftus (Yorks)

(Note that CWGC and SDGW differ widely as to place of birth! - 1911 census gives place of birth as Grosmont.)
