of War Memorials
The Men of Cheltenham War Memorial is located on the Promenade, immediately in front of the Council Offices.
The memorial is a large tapering stone obelisk surmounting a two-stepped stone plinth. The top step of the plinth bears a dedication. Commemorations are on the plinth below. The whole is set on a three-stepped stone base in a paved area. In relief at the bottom of obelisk is the Town Coat of Arms and wreath with reversed sword and dates "1914-1919".
1287 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War.
The Website "Cheltenham Remembers" has a Roll of Honour with the names of all those commmeorated, with biographical details in some cases.
7 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment were amongst those Cheltonians who lost their lives in the First World War. 6 of the names are shown on the memorial as having served with the Yorkshire Regiment, but one name (Captain Derrick) was incorrectly shown as serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment.
