The First World War Memorial for Esh is a stained glass window
in the Church of St. Michael and All Angels.
At the base of the window, the following words have been written;-
AMDG. In honoured Memory of Thomas Bousfield, George Dodds,
Simpson Dunn
John Keavney, Joseph Rennison, John Stephenson, John Robert Swinbank
Who gave their lives for KIng and Country in the Great War 1914 - 1918.
Of the above 7 names, 1 soldier served with the Yorkshire Regiment.
Also in the church at Esh are the War Memorials from the Church of St. John the Baptist, Quebec, and the War Memorial from Cornsay Colliery United Methodist Church.
Lance Corporal Thomas Bousfield. 18220. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Samuel and Hannah Bousfield, of Old Esh, Durham; husband
of Margaret Bousfield, of 20, Front St., Langley Park, nr. Durham. Killed
14 October 1916. Aged 36.
Born Gales (Nr Richmond - Yorks), Enlisted Durham, Resided Langley Park.
Buried MONT HUON MILITARY CEMETERY, LE TREPORT.

in the church at Esh

In the above photo, the back of the War Memorial from
Cornsay Colliery United Methodist Church can just be seen sticking out at
the base of the photo. This is large marble plaque (for a description see
the North
East War Memorials Project website). Its ultimate destination has still
to be decided upon.
One soldier of the Yorkshire Regiment is amongst the 39 men commemorated on
this memorial.
Private Humphrey Walton. 260124. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Formerly 4053 Durham L I. Son of John and Jane Walton, of 93, South Terrace,
Cornsay Colliery, Co. Durham. Killed 31 July 1917. Aged 23.
Born Edmondsley (Durham), Enlisted Durham, Resided Cornsay Colliery.
Commemorated on Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.
