Yorkshire
Regiment War Graves, - Fricourt British Cemetery |
Fricourt British Cemetery has special significance for the Yorkshire
Regiment, in that of the 132 identified casualties buried in the cemetery 92
were from the Yorkshire Regiment. Of these 92 men, the large majority were killed
on 1 July 1916 (the first day of the Battle of the Somme) and almost all were
from the 7th Battalion. The 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment suffered grievously
at Fricourt on 1 July 1916, - losing 5 officers killed and 10 wounded, and with
336 non-commissioned officers and men killed, wounded, or missing.
There is a commorative stone in Fricourt British Cemetery which records the
fact that 59 NCOs and men of the 7th Battalion are buried in a single place
in the centre of the cemetery (a shell crater?). Thus, there are 59 individual
headstones which state that the soldier is "believed to be buried in this
cemetery", - e.g. in the communal grave as opposed to an individual grave.
The soldiers who were buried in this communal grave are identified by a "*"
against their names in their descriptions, below.

In the corner of Fricourt British Cemetery is a memorial to the men of the 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment who fell on 1 July 1916. Some names on this memorial are additional to the names of the men buried in the cemetery. The Fricourt Memorial is unique in that it is placed in a War Graves cemetery.
