The Fricourt Memorial
Photo : Chris Weekes (<weebex12@hotmail.com>)
The Fricourt Memorial commemorates the men of the 7th Battalion who were killed on 1 July 1916, or who subsequently died of their wounds, in the opening of the Battle of the Somme. The memorial is located inside the Fricourt British Cemetery, in which 92 men of the 7th Battalion are buried.
The Memorial was erected in 1921, and replaced a temporary wooden memorial which had been put in place at an earlier date. Mary Henry, a grand daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Ronald Fife who was the Commanding Officer of the 7th Battalion on 1 July 1916. has very kindly donated a photograph of this early memorial to the Green Howards Museum. A copy of this photograph is shown below, in which the Regimental Numbers of the men who fell are also included.
117 names of the above men of the 7th Battalion are recorded on three faces of the square. 89 of the names refer to men buried in the cemetery, and the other names refer to men who are buried elsewhere or who have no known grave and are commemorated elsewhere.
Note that the recording of the names has been VERY inaccurate.
There are very many errors in the names as
listed on the Memorial, and the errors have been listed below.
Unfortunately, because the memorial was one erected by the Green Howards regiment
a century ago, these spelling errors cannot be corrected nowadays. (unlike
errors on Commonwealth War Graves Commission memorials or headstones.)
The names of those on the Memorial are as below.
Where they appear on the Memorial is shown as "Commemoration - 1",
"Commemoration - 2", or "Commemoration - 3" as per the
