The War Memorial for Ryhope

The War Memorial for Ryhope is located on the village green, alongside the road that used to carry through traffic through Ryhope itself. The Memorial is a cross on an octagonal pedestal, and commemorates the dead of both World Wars.

Names for those who lost their lives in the First World War are on bronze plaques on the eight main faces of the memorial, and those for the Second World War on the bronze plaques at the base of the Memorial. The names of those who lost their lives are recorded together with the the regiments / services they served in. The names of 40 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are recorded on two of the eight main panels.

As with other memorials, there is some confusion regarding Yorkshire Regiments. Men listed under the "East Yorkshire Regiment" were, in fact, in the Yorkshire Regiment. And vice versa.

The Memorial is dedicated to those who fell in the First World War by;-
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THOSE WHO, AT THE CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY, LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM ENDURED HARDNESS (sic) FACED DANGER AND FINALLY PASSED OUT OF THE SIGHT OF MEN BY THE PATH OF DUTY AND SELF-SACRIFICE GIVING UP THEIR OWN LIVES THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM. LET THEIR NAMES BE NOT FORGOTTEN. PRO PATRIA 1914 - 1918."

Details of the soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment and who are named on this Memorial are as below;-

Private John George Allison. 14562. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Florence Elizabeth Allison, of 16, Easington St., Easington Colliery, Co. Durham. Died 11 April 1918. Aged 29.

Private Thomas William Armstrong. 14699. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 30 September 1916.

Private Thomas Wilson Barnes, 13844. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Thomasena Drysdale (formerly Barnes), of 23, West Terrace, Ryhope Colliery, and the late Thomas Barnes. Died at home 20 December 1915. Aged 23.

Corporal Thomas Blackett. 14111. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 1 July 1916.
Born Grangetown (Yorks), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Grangetown.

Private Joseph Briggs. 12995. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 8 February 1917.
Born Waterhouses (Durham), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Ryhope (Durham).

Private Stanley William Brown, 14591. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John and Elizabeth Brown, of 8, Oswald Terrace, Grangetown. Sunderland. Killed 1 July 1916. Aged 24.

Private James William Churchill. 17750. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 1 August 1916.
Born East Rainton (Durham), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Ryhope (Durham).

Private Herbert Colledge. 15261. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Husband of Florence Eva Colledge, of 6, Chastra St., Beeston Hill, Leeds.
Died at home 29 February 1920. Aged 37.
(Herbert Colledge enlisted in Leeds on 14 October 1914; was wounded, - GSW to face and eyes, Dec 1916. Discharged 23 April 1917. Possibly blind?)

Private Joseph Connolly. 16151. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 5 August 1916.

(Private Thomas Elliott is not listed amongst the Yorkshire Regiment soldiers on the Ryhope memorial, but there is a "T Elliot" listed amongst the East Yorkshire soldiers. There WAS a "T Elliott" of the East Yorks who had previously served in the Yorkshire Regiment, but he was born in Brandon and enlisted in Durham. Somehow, one suspects that "T Elliot" was the one detailed above).

(Although not linked to Ryhope directly by the data in SDGW, Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) has researched the records for Private Young and has shown reasonably convincingly that the "P Young of the DLI" on the Ryhope Memorial is the above man. Grangetown is in the civil parish of Bishopwearmouth and Ryhope.)
